Upon exceeding 100,000 missing and unaccounted for persons, relatives of the victims expressed their concern at the number reached, for which they demanded that this crisis be addressed in a comprehensive and immediate manner in proportion to this heartbreaking number of missing persons.
According to the National Registry of Missing and Unlocated Persons, this Monday more than 100,012 people were reported missing, of which 24% are women.
Given this, the families, from more than 80 groups and organizations that make up the Movement for Our Disappeared in 24 states of the Mexican Republic and 3 Central American countries, expressed that although they know with certainty that said figure is far below below the number of cases that they see and live day by day, they also demand that the Mexican State present and implement a public search policy in life, in addition to identification, which implies concrete collaborative actions for the systematization of information found in different forensic spaces.
“In addition to the seriousness of this figure, search groups denounce that this figure is inaccurate because, based on our experience, there is a significant and diverse number of cases not considered within the registry.
“We demand that the Mexican State urgently, forcefully and comprehensively address the serious crisis of disappearances and human identification that we are experiencing in Mexico, which must be understood as part of a terrible crisis of violence and insecurity,” they underline.
And it is that the groups admitted that for a long time they have done hard work to promote legal frameworks, public policies and initiatives that can guarantee finding their loved ones, however, they regret that they have verified “with indignation and enormous pain” that this it has not been enough.
“Some of us have been searching for decades and it is very painful and worrying that more and more families are joining for the same cause… An even more determined effort on your part is imperative, Mr. President: make this agenda a priority decision of your government, do not delegate it, instruct all authorities to work in this direction and to do it hand in hand with the families in a sensitive and committed way”, they called.
In this context, the families recalled that at the beginning of this government, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his willingness to work with and listen to the families, hand in hand with his cabinet, to strengthen a comprehensive public policy that could help them find to their loved ones, however, they said that today, in the face of such a painful figure, they are calling for them to be heard and to work together for a less violent country in which no one has to look for their loved ones.
Finally, the groups reiterated that the government should take forceful and immediate measures that range from a search with a differentiated approach that considers and contemplates migrants, women, and children and adolescents.
As well as urging the prosecutor’s offices and institutions, under the impetus of the President and the Governors, to fully assume their responsibilities in matters of search and investigation, and to work in concert and firmly with the families and other authorities to advance in the truth and justice.
This by pointing out that the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic has been omitted since 2018 in the creation of crucial databases that were ordered by the General Law on disappearances. “It is urgent to create, with the full participation of the families, the National Forensic Data Bank and the National Registry of Common and Clandestine Graves; tools without which the search and identification of our relatives remains disjointed and partial”, they said.
In addition to asking that, in the face of threats, violence and the criminalization of human rights defenders, the State must recognize searchers as such and, in addition, guarantee their protection.
