Mexico reported a first case of the severe H5N1 strain of the bird fluThe Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) reported on Friday.
The virus was detected in a wild bird in the Metepec district, west of Mexico City, said the WHOA, which bases its report on information from Mexican authorities.
“This report represents the first isolation of a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 in Mexico, which occurred in a bird that is not farmed and in one of the migratory wild bird corridors that cross the country,” the entity said.
The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)commonly called avian flu, has killed flocks of poultry in the United States and Europe this year, and experts are concerned the virus has not subsided as it once did during the northern hemisphere summer.
Mexico has experienced outbreaks of another strain of bird flu, the H7N3in some areas of the country in the last decade, including cases earlier this year.
