Mexico strives to recover category 1 in aviation: SICT

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) agreed that the prompt recovery of Category 1 for the Mexican commercial aviation industry is a priority for the governments of Mexico and the United States, in order to guarantee the air safety of some 30 million passengers.

This was stated by the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma Barraganthe person in charge of dispatching the SICT, Jorge Nuno Laraas well as Billy NolenActing Administrator of the FAA.

Billy Nolen recognized the corrective actions undertaken in aviation security by the Mexican authorities.

The foregoing, after the SICT submitted to the FAA its work plan to recover the Category 1which was accepted by the US aeronautical authorities to address three issues: legal changes, budget for AFAC and corrective action plan in terms of operational air safety.

It was commented that the SICT is aware of the progress of the corrective action plan, so the commitment to work in a timely manner on what is needed was raised.

One of the commitments agreed upon at the high-level meeting, between the SICT and the FAA, is to conclude the Corrective Action Plan for Mexican civil aviation no later than next December.

In January 2023, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration and his team will travel to Mexico with the aim of presenting the conclusions of the corrective action plan, as well as defining the final audit date to recover Category 1 before the summer of that year.
