Mexico will end 2022 with a total of 43,427 million pesos of exports of transportation services. information technology (IT), which include the services offered by application developers and administrators (apps), according to an estimate by the IDC consultancy.
During the first semester of 2022, Mexico exported 21,753 million pesos in IT services. These exports represented 27% of the total market for IT services in the country, which until the first semester registered a value of 80.321 million pesos, while the local market represented 73% of the total.
For all of 2022, the IT services market will have a total value of 158,087 million pesos, of which 43,427 million will come from the export of these services and 114,660 will be generated by the local market.
Hugo Guevara, Senior IT Services Analyst at IDCsaid that the consultancy estimate for 2023 was that the total value of the IT services market will be 177,264 million pesos, an increase of 18% compared to 2022, of which 52,098 million will be generated by exports and 125,166 million for the local market.
United States, main destination
As in the case of most of the products that Mexico exports, the United States receives 90% of the national IT services exports. They are followed by Europe and in particular Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany, with 4%; Canada, 3% and Latin America, also with 3 percent.
According to Guevara, this phenomenon responds to the fact that Mexico shares all its time zones with the United States; the search to reduce costs by American companies and organizations and the macroeconomic strength in which Mexico is located.
Organizations in the United States are seeing Mexico as an opportunity to relocate their IT workloads and see some appeal in the country over India, the largest technology outsourcing market,” he said.
However, while the United States imports 60% of IT services globally, Mexico barely contributes 3% of this market.
Programmers and administrators
The main IT services exported from Mexico correspond to those of custom application development, with 33%; application management (25%), systems integration (14%) and network services (8%).
Within the verticals that make up the Mexican information and communications technology (ICT) market, IT services, both exports and the local market, is the largest, compared to infrastructure, cybersecurity, and networks. In addition, exports of this type of services are those that reflect the greatest growth.
According to Guevara, even with the stock market declines and layoffs experienced by many US technology companies, everything seems to indicate that there will continue to be a market for Mexican exports of IT services in the near future, supported by moderate growth in the economy. Mexico, inflation of around 8% and stability in the national currency, will grow 29% in 2023.
