Mexico will offer work visas to Central Americans for up to one year

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on Monday that his government will offer one year work visa to Central Americans, at a time when the nation, together with the United States, seeks to curb mass irregular migration.

Without detailing the number of temporary work documents that he will grant or to which nations, the president explained that the visas can be used for jobs focused on public works, since the country requires “skilled labor.”

“We guarantee them a one-year visa, without problem, for them to assess,” López Obrador said at his regular morning press conference, acknowledging that many migrants they arrive in the country with their sights set on the United States, even paying off a human smuggler.

In the past, he explained, his Government has given temporary visas for migrants to be hired in works such as: the Mayan Train, refineries, on the isthmus, and others that are carried out in the country. López Obrador also affirmed that these programs do not affect Mexican employees.

“It does not compete with us, it does not take jobs from Mexicans because there is, fortunately (…) employment,” he added.

Every year, tens of thousands of Migrants cross Mexico to go to the United Statesbut as that nation tightens its laws they choose to stay in the country or are deported to their nations.
