A 15-year-old high school student killed three classmates and wounded six others on Tuesday after opening fire at a Michigan high school, authorities have confirmed. The attack took place in a town of 22,000 inhabitants located 50 miles north of Detroit. The county sheriff told reporters that the attacker’s motives are unknown.
The events took place after noon at the Oxford Institute in Oxford Township. The police came immediately after receiving an avalanche of calls to 911, the emergency number, which referred to the presence of an armed individual shooting in the center, the sheriff explained. The agents managed to arrest the suspect at the scene and seize a semiautomatic pistol from him.
The coordinator of the Oxford Township educational network, Tim Throne, said the identity of the victims and whether their families have been informed of what happened is still unknown. “I am shocked. It’s horrible, ”the school supervisor told reporters.
The institute closed its doors tightly after the event, and numerous students found refuge in empty classrooms while law enforcement searched the facilities. They were then driven to a nearby store, where they were picked up by their parents.
In the first six months of the year, more than 270 mass shootings were recorded in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive research group. Since 2020, the country has experienced an increase in armed violence, a phenomenon that is especially notable in large cities, but which also affects small ones, as the Oxford Township shooting demonstrates.
