Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment have reversed the planned price increase for their upcoming title, The Outer Worlds 2, which will now launch at the current industry standard of $69.99 instead of the previously announced $79.99.
The initial price hike was part of a broader trend that has seen companies like Microsoft and Sony increase the cost of console hardware and consider raising the base price for major software releases. This trend comes amid a challenging economic climate for consumers, influenced by supply chain issues and inflation.
In a statement, an Xbox spokesperson confirmed the pricing change for the highly anticipated sci-fi RPG. “We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,” the statement reads.
Customers who have already pre-ordered the game at the $79.99 price point will need to seek a refund from their retailer. Microsoft has advised that some retailers will process refunds immediately, while others will begin doing so the following day. After securing a refund, customers can pre-order the title again at the new, lower price.
The decision is a notable reversal in a market where prices have generally been on the rise. While the higher price point could have encouraged more players to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, where the title will be available on day one, this move aligns the game’s retail cost with consumer expectations and current market dynamics.
The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass and via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
