The caretaker Prime Minister of Lebanon said Najib Mikati that Targeting Israel, the southern suburb of Beirut, today, Friday, proves once again that it “does not give weight to any humanitarian, legal, or moral considerations,” and considered that it “is proceeding with what resembles genocide.”
The Israeli air force launched a raid on a residential apartment in the Al-Jamous area in the southern suburb, resulting in 8 deaths and 59 injuries, according to a preliminary tally from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Israel said the raid was intended to assassinate Ibrahim Aqil Head of Operations Department HezbollahA security source told Al Jazeera that the Israeli raid targeted security and military officials in Hezbollah, including Aqil.
Commenting on the incident, Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makari said – after a cabinet session – that Mikati was informed during the session of the new Israeli aggression on the southern suburb, and he quoted Mikati as saying that “this targeting of a populated residential area proves once again that the Israeli enemy does not give weight to any humanitarian, legal, or moral considerations.”
Mikati added that “the Israeli enemy is continuing what resembles genocide, and we witnessed its most horrific images in the aggression that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, which claimed dozens of martyrs and thousands of wounded,” referring to the wave of widespread bombings that targeted wireless communication devices across Lebanon, killing 37 people and wounding more than 3,250 others, including children and women.
He stressed that “this new aggression came as a result of the global conscience and the international community's silence on the violation of human rights, justice and laws.”
Today's attack is the third launched by Israel on the southern suburb of Beirut, the main stronghold of Hezbollah, since the start of the wave of mutual clashes nearly a year ago. It previously assassinated on January 2, 2024 Saleh Al-Arouri Deputy Head of the Political Bureau of the Movement agitationOn July 30, a prominent Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukr.
