(CNN) — Miley Cyrus’ 2023 single “Flowers,” a song from her latest album “Endless Summer Vacation,” became the fastest song to cross 1 billion streams on Spotify in May following its release earlier this year.
Some (or perhaps much) of the talk surrounding the “Flowers” single and music video stemmed from speculation that the song is about her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.
But it turns out that this is not entirely true.
An interview with British Vogue published Thursday describes Cyrus as “allergic” to the idea that her recent music is directly related to her 10-year relationship with Hemsworth.
“I wouldn’t erase my story or want it erased,” Cyrus told Vogue regarding her relationship with Hemsworth. The singer herself further explained that she feels that “having an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling.”
Cyrus revealed in the interview that at first “Flowers” wasn’t the self-love anthem that it is now, saying that “it used to be more like the 1950s. The saddest song. Like, ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better.’
Cyrus said she knew the final product was an instant hit, and that upon its release, fellow pop artist Lil Nas X even asked Cyrus if she was “excited” for the success of “Flowers.”
“No,” she told him, adding that “everything is seasonal,” and that she’s fine with that.
Cyrus has come a long way from her days as a Disney Channel star when she played the tween icon Hannah Montana, through her “Bangerz” era when she wagged her tongue twerking onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards dressed in a costume of teddy bear made to measure.
Now, the “Flowers” singer seems quite content with where she is at 30, saying, “It’s not about being serious.”
“I just evolved.”
