- Footage shows angry ladder snake hissing on road in Diseminado Cabo Gata
- Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson from Cardiff bitten by the animal in Spain
- Mr Wilson and girlfriend took pictures then released it back into wild
This is the startling moment a snake bit a wildlife enthusiast as he rescued it from a road in Spain.
Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson, from Cardiff, was driving through the countryside in Diseminado Cabo Gata, Almeria, south-east Spain, with his girlfriend Serenity looking for snakes.
They saw what they thought was a stick at first but stopped the car when they realised it was a ladder snake crossing the road.
Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson, from Cardiff, was driving through the Almeria countryside in Diseminado Cabo Gata, Spain, on November 21 with his girlfriend looking for snakes. They stopped the car when they spotted a ladder snake who bit Mr Wilson as he picked it up
As Mr Wilson picked the snake up again, it hissed ferociously before the couple then released it back into the direction it was heading
Mr Wilson films as he and his girlfriend crouch by the ladder snake.
It starts to hiss and then suddenly lunges towards the camera, bearing its fangs, as Mr Wilson goes to pick it up.
The snake has bitten him, and he zooms in on his blood covered hand, saying: ‘I shouldn’t be scared.’
Mr Wilson picks up the snake again while wearing a head camera and tells some passersby about it
However, the bite does not deter the wildlife enthusiast, who keeps on handling and taking photos of the snake, which draws a small crowd of people.
The couple called the snake ‘beautiful’ and Serenity remarks that part of its tail is missing, before they place it safely at the side of the road.
Mr Wilson said: ‘We were extremely lucky to see this animal so late in the year. I was not expecting to see a snake so close to winter but nature always has surprises apparently. These animals are always amazing to see out in the countryside.’
Ladder snakes are a species of non-venomous snake which enjoy bushy cover, including orchards, vineyards, hedges and overgrown dry-stone walls.
Serenity films as the pair hold and talk about the snake, spotted in rural Spain
The couple described the snake as ‘beautiful’ and ‘feisty’ and noted it did not have a tail. They thought it may have been in a fight in the past
