In a context of social and economic inequality, as well as the deterioration of the physical and mental health of the population that lives in cities, it is necessary for governments to focus on greater investment in urban parks over the next decade, according to World Urban Parks (WUP).
The WUP call is made as part of the World Congress of Urban Parkswhich is held in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and in which environmentalists, academics and public officials from 40 countries participate, as well as more than 200 urban organizations from different parts of the world.
For the Mexican environmentalist Luis Romahn, executive director of the WUP, the right to the city, which contemplates equitable and accessible access to quality public spaces, is a human right, so the discussion of the future of urban parks requires a technical, plural and collaborative work between society, environmental organizations, companies and governments.
In this sense, the executive committee of the WUP called on the governments of the 100 largest cities in the world to have a comprehensive approach to the future of urban parks.
“It is necessary to adopt international standards of management of urban parks and increase public investment in these spaces, as an urgent and priority measure for adaptation to climate change”, highlighted the committee.
Jayne Miller, President of the World Organization for Urban Parkspointed out that the choice of Monterrey as the venue for the congress, “is a way of recognizing the will that this Mexican city has shown in the last twenty years to consolidate the transformation of an old complex of steel foundry factories into an urban park of international quality”.
For the mayor of Monterrey, Luis Donaldo Colosio, climate change should be a priority for governments, since the Monterrey city alone has 3.7 million inhabitants, so it is necessary that this issue be part of the discussion in the public agenda to mitigate its effects.
“In recent years, the highest temperatures in our history have occurred in Monterrey, with increasingly shorter rainy seasons and a severe drought,” he said.
The mayor highlighted the importance of addressing this global problem, from the local level, through “strategic climate action projects, such as the creation of urban parkssince they generate common prosperity, a vision of the future and better health conditions, water management and air quality”.
