Earlier, crowds of Trump supporters stormed the police barricades around the Capitol building.
They went up to the main yard of the building, raised pro-Trump flags, and chanted slogans rejecting the results of the presidential election, which resulted in Democrat Joe Biden winning.
Pictures and videos showed US police firing tear gas in an attempt to prevent more supporters of the outgoing president from storming the Congress building.
Trump had called on his supporters during a demonstration that was organized today to head to Congress, and events escalated in the vicinity of Congress after Trump demanded his supporters “not to surrender and refuse to admit defeat,” until they stormed the Capitol to plead with them afterwards to evacuate him and return to their homes.
