Rochester, N.Y. — A staff member for Rep. Joe Morelle (D-Irondequoit) faces charges in Washington after U.S. Capitol Police reported finding four ammunition magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition in his bag during routine X-ray screening Monday morning.
Police said Michael Hopkins, 38, communications director for the congressman, was going through screening in the Cannon House Office Building around 8:45 a.m. when they found the items in a bag. Hopkins reportedly told police he forgot the ammunition was in his bag.
Hopkins is charged with unlawful possession of ammunition, including one charge for possession of a high-capacity magazine.
Jo Stiles, Morelle’s chief of staff, released a statement shortly after 11 a.m.
