The Russian mission to the United Nations announced that unilateral sanctions were not discussed in the UN Security Council, imposed on 20% of the member states of the United Nations.
“What raises particular concern is the imposition of unilateral compulsory measures, not based on international law, in the absence of a UN Security Council resolution or in addition to the measures taken by it,” said the legal official in the Russian mission to the United Nations, Maria Zabulotskaya.
And she continued: “Even in conditions of a global epidemic, there are unilateral measures imposed on 20% of the member states of the United Nations.”
It indicated that the countries that are subject to sanctions are deprived of access to borrowing mechanisms and foreign markets, which could push them to the brink of the abyss and deprive them of the resources necessary to implement their social obligations in front of their citizens.
She added that this situation remains in place despite calls by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to back down from sanctions during the period of the pandemic.
Zabolotskaya affirmed Russia’s support for Iran’s proposal on formulating basic principles to avoid unilateral restrictions, reduce their effectiveness and compensate for the losses resulting from them.
