Moscow and Damascus have expressed their concern about the deteriorating situation in Al-Hol camp, located in Hasakah Governorate, northeastern Syria, warning that conditions there have reached a critical point.
The head of the National Defense Administration Center of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Mikhail Mezentsev, and the Syrian Minister of Local Administration, Hussein Makhlouf, indicated in a joint statement issued today, Friday, that “the Kurdish authorities have effectively lost control of the camp in conjunction with the increase in the influence of the terrorist organization ISIS.
The statement described the current conditions in the camp (in which many families of ISIS militants live) as critical, indicating that its inmates, primarily children, face the threat of radicalization.
In the statement, the Russian and Syrian sides expressed their conviction that the countries from which their citizens reside in Al-Hol and other refugee camps in northeastern Syria should activate their efforts to organize the process of bringing them back to the homeland, similar to Russia.
At the same time, the statement stressed that the United States and its allies continue to prevent the situation inside Syria from stabilizing, adding that “illegal sanctions continue to stifle the Arab Republic.”
The statement held the United States and its allies responsible for exploiting financial and political tools to pressure international organizations to divert attention from the consequences of their sanctions against Syria and their violations of its sovereignty.
The statement called on the American side to “stop exercising a destabilizing influence on the situation in Syria and to strictly adhere to international law and the principles of the United Nations.”
