The Russian ambassador to Cairo, Georgy Borisenko, announced that the embassy had sent a memorandum to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting to provide complete information about Russian citizens imprisoned in Egypt.
The ambassador told “TASS” that the talk is about citizens of both Ingushetia and the Republic of Kabardin-Balkar, who were taken into custody after the deportation of five Russian citizens from Egypt last December and January.
The diplomat indicated that the embassy wants to know what charges are against these two citizens and why they were not released along with the other former prisoners, adding that the Russian side will insist on their “urgent release.”
Borisenko stated that after the Egyptian authorities deported, on December 27, a Chechen citizen, and then 4 other people on January 26, only two Russian citizens remain in prison, they are Ingush “Zitov” (detained since August 2018) and “Shilov” from Kabardin. Balkar, who was arrested in April 2019.
The ambassador emphasized that all the Russian detainees faced accusations of providing financial support to terrorist organizations and promoting the ideas of extremism, but he indicated that the embassy has not yet received specific information about the crimes they committed, according to the Egyptian authorities.
