A mother-of-two has divided opinion after revealing she’s spending £10,000 on her children’s Christmas presents after a ‘really tough year’.

Raj Gill, from Glasgow, and Constance Smith of Wigan appeared on This Morning today to debate whether parents should be saving or splurging cash this Christmas.

The journalist, who has a 17-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son, says that her kids ‘deserve’ to be treated – with an £8,000 car, a tablet and games consoles after being ‘really good children’ throughout the pandemic.’

Viewers were divided over the issue, with some insisting there’s nothing wrong with splashing out if you can afford it, while others felt the mother was ‘spoiling her children’ by showering them with expensive gifts.

‘We’re going to have a massive blow out and spend, spend, spend,’ said Raj. ‘They deserve it, they’ve been really good children and it’s been a really tough year.

‘We’re BAME so more susceptible to Covid and they’ve handled it so well and we really want to spoil them.’

The parents will buy their daughter an £8,000 car, alongside various beauty products while gifting their son with a games console and monitor, alongside a phone and tablet.

Defending their spending, Raj went on: ‘We haven’t been on holiday, we haven’t eaten out and they never ask for anything. This is coming from me, this is what I want to do for them. They’re really good kids

‘Generally I’m more of an experience based person. I like to take them away for dinner and lunch – wee treats here and there.

‘But this year we haven’t been able to have those experiences, these aren’t kids who will fall down a slippery slope, they’re very grounded.’

Despite her arguments many viewers felt that spending £10,000 is ‘insane’, with one writing: ‘Come on 10K? That’s a piece of nonsense.’

Another said: ‘OMG this woman spoils her children way too much. How can she spend 10K on gifts for her children? That is insane.’

But others defended the mother, with one writing: ‘Save or Splurge…it all depends on how much money you have. If you have the money to spend..why not..especially if the kids worked hard/been good..but family memories always wins over money. Happy Holidays Everyone.’

Another said: ‘If you can afford and you want to get it for them then do it….but as a parent you know if your child will appreciate it or not.’

Meanwhile, Constance argued that experiences are much more worthwhile than spending money on expensive gifts, and that she values things like baking with her children over giving them pricey presents.

‘I think you can’t buy love’, she said. ‘I spent £20 last year on a charity shop dolls house and did it up using free samples and being a bit savvy about it and it looks worth hundreds of pounds – but for me that’s not the point, it’s not the gift it’s love attention and time.

‘I mean some people can’t spend anything, I think time spends volumes for a child, baking – so you’re making food for the family and doing something together – that goes a long way.

‘I can’t remember what I got as a child for birthday’s and Christmas’ but I can remember going places spending time with family and I think that went out into adult life.’
