Mountain vacation ‘highly discouraged,’ I-80 closes as newest storm blows via Sierra

“Dangerous to impossible” travel is predicted in the Sierra Nevada as a different winter season storm blows by the mountains Saturday, according to the Countrywide Climate Services.

The temperature service also claimed it expects a band of significant rain to strike, as the front moves up the Highway 80 corridor.

“Right now it appears to be like some genuinely rigorous snow,” National Weather conditions Services meteorologist Eric Kurth said. “With that heavier band of showers and thunderstorms — the remnants of that going up in there — items could get even heavier.”

The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, found at an elevation of 6,894 ft in Soda Springs, California, mentioned it experienced gained 21.3 inches of snow in a 24-hour period of time as of 8:50 a.m.

There was 10 ft of snow currently on the ground, the lab claimed, and it expects 2 to 3 extra ft by Monday early morning.

“Dangerous to unachievable Sierra travel is expected as a line of powerful thunderstorms moves by about the following couple hrs,” the temperature services tweeted at 11:20 a.m. Saturday. “Heavy snowfall rates 2-4” with zero visibility & gusty winds will develop impassable roadways & whiteout disorders. Travel is Highly DISCOURAGED!”

Highway closures

Multiple spin-outs triggered targeted visitors to be held at a variety of places up the hill toward Lake Tahoe on eastbound Interstate 80 starting at Drum Highway, according to Caltrans.

Website traffic was stopped on Donner Summit, Caltrans reported in a article on Twitter.

The highway was shut westbound at the point out line and eastbound at Colfax owing to spin-outs, higher winds and white-out driving problems, in accordance to the California Freeway Patrol.

Targeted visitors was held eastbound on the freeway around two miles east of Baxter due to spin-outs, the CHP mentioned. The route is closed at Colfax to reduce a website traffic jam up the hill.

Caltrans reported targeted visitors is also remaining held on Highway 50 in between Echo Summit and Meyers thanks to many spin-outs.

Highway 49 is shut from about 4 miles north of the Nevada/Yuba County line at Marysville Road to Sattley in Sierra County because of to weighty snow, Caltrans noted.

Freeway 20 is shut between Nevada Street and the I-80 junction owing to icy road problems.

There is no approximated time to re-open any of these roadways.
