Movistar Chile will focus its investment capacity on 5G network deployment

After the national deployment of the first phase of 5G in Chile, which had as its goal the erection of 6,601 antennas (among the three concessionaires that were awarded the tender in February 2021), the president of Movistar Chile, Roberto Muñoz, decided to show the impact of technology on communities, as well as detailing the company’s plans.

In a first balance on the development of the network, he acknowledged that it involved a lot of effort to set it up. Unlike past tenders, 5G required three times as many towers to be able to fulfill what was promised in stage 1 of the auction.

To this was added that after the pandemic, the telecommunications scenario was restructured, with the appearance of new players such as Mundo and the merger of VTR with Claro Chile, which will result in new pressures for Movistar.

The challenge for 2025 is for the company to be 100% fiber optic, a goal that could even be achieved earlier, since 93% of Movistar’s broadband structure is through this technology.

Regarding the balance of the closing of the first phase of the 5G deployment, Muñoz said that “the 5G tender is one of the most demanding contests we have had with a deployment in record time. “Now, a large part of our investment capacity will be focused on 5G, because we are reaching a relevant size in fiber,” he said.
