NEW YORK (TNND) — A politician who represents Georgia said a migrant accused of setting a woman on fire on the New York City subway should get the death penalty.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican, shared her opinion about 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta on X.
“Death penalty, don’t waste money on a lengthy trial,” she wrote on Christmas Eve.
“Convict him and finish him,” she added, also referencing footage of the crime that’s been circulating on social media. “What he did is so incredibly evil. I can’t watch the video anymore. And how it seems like no one tried to save her is beyond me. Maybe they did but it doesn’t seem like it.”
Zapeta allegedly set fire to a woman while she was sleeping on a train in Brooklyn on Sunday, with authorities saying he used a shirt to fan the flames.
Federal immigration officials said the suspect is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally.
Zapeta was charged with two counts of murder, as well as one count of arson. The top charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
During a news conference earlier this week, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the murder as “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being.”
Zapeta is being jailed at the Rikers Island complex and is due back in court on Friday.
