A mum has shared the simple budgeting cleaning trick that saves her thousands of dollars every year in cleaning products, but she said her husband thinks it’s ‘too far’.
The Australian woman, called Meg, posted on Facebook, where she said she always cuts ‘things in half to make them last longer’.
She does this with items including soap bars, sponges, dishwasher tablets and shampoo and conditioner bars.

Meg wrote: ‘Husband thinks it’s too far, I think it’s genius. I cut things in half to make them last longer.’
She added: ‘It’s small things that have made a difference. Doing little things like this contributed to us being debt-free and achieving our dreams’.
It wasn’t long before hundreds of others weighed in and said what a good idea they thought it was.
While others shared that they do similar at home.
Many said they thought it was a genius cleaning idea as so often, we use far too much of items like dishwasher tablets and washing powder (stock image)
‘We cut dishwasher tablets in half and it saves a fortune,’ one commenter wrote.
Another said: ‘I water down cleaning supplies. There is no way you need that amount of product. I even water down my laundry liquid and dish soap. It’s easier to do that then remember to not be as heavy handed’.
A third said she remembers being told by a washing machine repair man that you should ‘only ever use half of what the manufacturers’ recommended of washing powder’.
‘Then, the installer for our dishwasher also told us only one teaspoon of powder is needed to wash your dishes and instead of that chemical drying solution you open your dish door when it’s done to stop the condensation from wetting your dishes,’ she added.
However, not everyone was on board with the idea – with some saying they side with Meg’s husband.
‘Sorry I’m with your husband. Cutting things in half doesn’t make them last longer. I get cutting down on stuff but soap is ridiculously cheap and cutting it on two pieces doesn’t change anything,’ one woman wrote.
‘I don’t think this works,’ another added.
