SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore forwards Sierra Lichtie and Mary Carter each scored in double figures, but Cal Poly was unable to get its offense going as the Mustangs fell at home Saturday to the University of Hawai’i, 62-50.
Lichtie scored a team high 11 points and had 11 rebounds off the bench while Carter finished with 10 points. Guards Ashley Hiraki and Sydney Bourland each added nine points for the Mustangs (6-8, 1-3 Big West), who shot 31 percent from the field and 20 percent from three.
Hawai’i (7-6, 1-2 Big West), the 2022 and 2023 Big West champions, had three in double digits as they shot 40 percent from the field. Guard Lily Wahinekapu and forward Meilani McBee each had 14 while forward Brooklyn Rewers had 11.
The Rainbow Wahine scored the first five points of the game before back-to-back Hiraki threes put Cal Poly in front midway through the first quarter. The Mustangs led 16-13 after the first quarter and their lead of 18-13 in the second would be their largest of the game.
Hawai’i had a 15-4 run through the first seven minutes of the second quarter to take a 28-20 lead. They finished the second outscoring the Mustangs 19-5 for the quarter and led 32-21 at the half.
With eight minutes left in the third, Cal Poly went on a 6-0 run to get back within eight and later got back within eight with less than a minute to go in the third. However, the Mustangs were never able to cut the deficit down to fewer than eight the rest of the way.
Next up, Cal Poly will host UC San Diego Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center with the game airing on ESPN+.
