In a statement posted on Facebook today, Wednesday, the movement indicated that the army has placed its interests above the interests of vulnerable groups of people facing difficulties during the Coronavirus pandemic. The virus has killed more than 3,100 people in Myanmar, with the highest toll in Southeast Asia.
The statement said, “We refuse to obey any orders from the illegal military regime which has shown that it does not respect our poor patients.”
Students and youth groups have also joined the civil disobedience campaign.
The Myanmar army carried out a coup on Monday, in response to what it described as the rigging of the November elections, which the National League for Democracy, headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, won by an overwhelming majority. The army arrested each of the country’s president, his advisor, and other leaders, imposed a state of emergency, and announced the handover of power to the commander-in-chief of the army.
