(Trends Wide) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she will remain a member of Congress serving San Francisco, but will not seek re-election to her party leadership.
“I will not seek re-election for the Democratic leadership in the next Congress. For me, the time has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so highly respect, and I am grateful that so many people are ready and willing to take on this incredible responsibility,” Pelosi said.
In a speech to the House of Representatives, Pelosi defended the party’s legislative achievements under her leadership before saying, “Now we must move boldly into the future.”
His announcement comes after Democrats lost their majority in the House but retained control of the Senate in the 2022 midterm elections, avoiding a potentially larger “red wave.”
Pelosi said she first visited the capital as a child, and that then she would never have imagined that she would go “from a home builder to a House speaker.”
