Joel Embiid pay the fine imposed on a rival Jos Alvarado, with whom he had a brush in the recent match between the Sixers and the Pelicans. Midway through the second quarter, a foul by the Cameroonian pvot sent Garrett Temple. It was then that the rookie, despite his 30 centimeters difference (2.13 meters compared to 1.83) faced his rival exchanging words. Both of them were penalized with a technique.
Hours later, Alvarado confessed that Embiid would be responsible for paying the $2,000 fine that came with his technique. After the victory against the Lakers, the pvot explained the reasons that had led him to do so: “I like his energy. He plays hard. He competes. He didn’t back down. I respected that. I like that about him,” said Embiid, who didn’t go into detail about his heated words: “It was just normal trash talk, two guys going at each other on the court.”
“We talked during the game, but with love and respect. There was a heated moment, but nothing was personal. We were playing basketball, trying to attack each other,” Alvarado explained in his version of events.
$31 million difference
Embiid earns $31.5 million this season and when he finishes he will have accumulated 132 in his entire NBA career while Alvarado has a dual contract that allows him to play in both the NBA and the G League and earns $462,000.
“After the match I went up to him and told him to keep fighting and keep going. it was the least he could do. He doesn’t earn as much as others guys in the league. I felt that it depended on me I didn’t want him to lose that money because I’m sure we all need it.”Embiid finished.
