Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant recently revealed that he smelt of marijuana when he and NBA commissioner Adam Silver had a meeting about taking cannabis off the league’s Banned Substance List.
The topic came up while Durant was being interviewed by Squawk Box co-anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin, who asked how Silver and the NBA felt about Durant being very public about investing into cannabis companies.
‘I actually called him and advocated for him to take marijuana off the Banned Substance List,’ said Durant.
‘I just felt like it was becoming a thing around the country, around the world…The stigma behind it wasn’t as negative as it was before. It doesn’t affect you in any negative way.’
The NBA has in fact gone on to remove it from the Banned Substance List and the anti-drug testing program in it’s newly agreed to Collective Bargaining Agreement, and culminated a process that began back during the 2019-2020 season.

Silver has since gone on to remove marijuana from the league’s Banned Substance List
Durant made the admission during a interview with CNBC after a question about investing in various cannabis companies and how the league responded to him doing so
When asked how exactly Durant convinced Silver go along with the idea the 13-time All-Star said: ‘Well, he smelled it when I walked in so I didn’t really have to say much, you know what I’m saying?
‘He kind of understood where this was going…It’s the NBA, man… everybody does it, to be honest. It’s like wine at this point.’
Durant also revealed that during the conversation Silver stated he ‘agreed’ with Durant’s viewpoint.
The 10-time All-NBA forward has long been an advocate of marijuana and had been publicly calling for it to be removed from the Banned Substance List back when he was injured during the 2020 season and still a member of the Brooklyn Nets.
He and his business partner Rich Kleiman have invested in several companies including Dutchie, Canopy Rivers and Weedmaps as part of their effort to destigmatize weed.
Durant also sternly disagreed when Cronin attempted to call Durant ‘the’ or even ‘a’ pioneer of getting marijuana off the Banned Substance List.
‘I just enjoy the plant,’ Durant said. ‘It’s as simple as that.’
