Net formal job creation in Brazil halved in January compared to the same month in 2022, according to data from the Ministry of Labor released Thursday, highlighting the challenges for a year in which an economic slowdown is expected .
The country created 83,297 net formal jobs in January, compared to 167,269 a year earlier.
The services sector once again led employment growth, which added 40,686 net jobs, closely followed by construction, which created 38,965 jobs.
Retail trade lost 53,524 jobs, the only sector of the five groups of economic activity surveyed that registered a drop.
The average monthly salary of the new jobs created in January increased by 4.62% compared to the previous month, up to 2,013 reais (391 dollars).
The total number of formally registered workers in Brazil increased by 0.2% compared to December, up to 42.5 million.
The figures exclude nearly 40 million undocumented workers who lack formal employment registration.
