Netflix accused of ‘blackwashing’ new docu-sequence Queen Cleopatra by casting black British actress

Netflix has been accused of ‘blackwashing’ history by casting a black actress as the traditionally Macedonian-Greek ruler.

The new docu-collection, African Queens: Queen Cleopatra, stars black British actress Adele James as the Egyptian ruler. Producer Jada Pinkett Smith stated she wanted to explain to the tale due to the fact ‘we never typically get to see or hear tales about black queens.’

But the trailer introduced final 7 days has drawn a furious backlash for showcasing claims from historians who assert that Cleopatra was black and had ‘curly hair.’ One of the historians featured states: ‘I remember my grandmother stating to me: I don’t treatment what they convey to you in school, Cleopatra was black.’

Hawass said the only rulers of Egypt identified to have been black had been the Kushite kings of the 25th Dynasty (747-656 BC).

‘Netflix is trying to provoke confusion by spreading false and misleading information that the origin of the Egyptian civilisation is black,’ he included and named on his countrymen to just take a stand towards the streaming giant. 

On Sunday, attorney Mahmoud al-Semary submitted a grievance with the general public prosecutor demanding that he acquire ‘the vital authorized measures’ to block entry to Netflix.

Egyptian actress and singer Somaya Elkhashab tweeted: ‘Identifying Queen Cleopatra as black for satisfying modern African American fantasies is pure theft of egyptian background and however an endeavor to rewrite history’s greats. 

‘Blackwashing a greek queen proves the obsession with white gals and this would not assist halting racism at all.’

‘Cleopatra’s heritage has been the subject of considerably educational debate, which has normally been dismissed by Hollywood. Now our sequence re-assesses this fascinating portion of her story.’
