The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that a Qatari court overturned the death sentence against 8 former Indian naval officers who were arrested last year.
Sources said that the eight men who were sentenced to death last October were accused of spying for Israel.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not say what the new ruling was, or what punishment the eight defendants would face.
She said, “I took note of the ruling issued today by the Court of Cassation in Qatar to reduce sentences.”
She continued, “We are in close contact with the legal team, as well as the men’s families, to decide on the next steps, and we will continue to discuss the matter with the Qatari authorities.”
The Indian Foreign Ministry declined to comment further on the issue. Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the procedures.
The embassies of Qatar and Israel in New Delhi did not respond to requests for comment.
A court of first instance in Qatar had previously issued a death sentence against the eight officers, who were working on a submarine project with a private company for the Qatari authorities.
More than 800,000 Indian citizens live and work in Qatar, which is also an important supplier of natural gas to India.
