On Tuesday (March 2nd), Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu paid an inspection visit to the “Olinovsk” plant, which produces the upgraded “Il-79MD-90A” aircraft.
The minister was informed of the situation related to the development of the military transport aircraft used by the Russian army.
At first glance, it appears that the upgraded aircraft resembles its basic version, which began production 50 years ago. However, its new developed model has undergone radical modifications after the plane underwent a deep development.
Among the most important of these modifications is the replacement of the old air engine previously used in the plane with the modern BS90A-76 engine, which led to an increase in its payload from 48 tons to 60 tons, reducing fuel consumption and increasing the capacity of the aircraft, which can now travel 9 thousand kilometers from Moscow to Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East without refueling.
The modifications were also made to the cockpit, which became digital after it was equipped with a windshield that shows all the information needed for the pilot during take-off, flight and landing.
It is reported that the “Ulyanovsk” plant last year produced 3 upgraded “Il-79 MD-90A” aircraft. It is expected that this year, 5 aircraft of this type will be produced. After the completion of the development of the automatic assembly line, the factory will be able to produce one aircraft per month.
The Minister of Defense said that the fleet of Russian military transport aircraft will include at the end of the current decade 250 upgraded and undeveloped Il-76 aircraft.
He added that the Russian army will also receive the upgraded “An-124” (Ruslan) transport aircraft, which will be produced by the Russian “Ulyanovsk” aircraft plant.
