New Orleans police have arrested a man they say opened fire at a high school football game at the Caesars Superdome Friday night.
Gavin Calais, 20, was booked into the Orleans Justice Center on counts of attempted second-degree murder and the illegal use of a weapon.
Police say the alleged shooting victim, 30, and his family were exiting the Division II non-select football state championship between Cecilia and Franklinton when Calais and his girlfriend were also leaving. The New Orleans Police Department said that the two had argued earlier in the night during the game, which prompted Calais to shoot at him while they were both leaving.
The NOPD said that officers in the area heard gunfire and found the victim shot. Paramedics soon brought him to an area hospital. He is now in stable condition, police say.
Police say witnesses gave officers a vehicle description and license plate that led them to Calais, who is from Arnaudville, Louisiana.
In addition to the football game, throngs of people attended Rod Wave’s concert nearby at the Smoothie King Center. A crowd waited near crime scene tape after midnight, trying to access their cars in a garage close by, according to social media videos.
Kirkpatrick said bringing violence into the city will not be tolerated.
“This incident underscores the importance of swift action and collaboration between our officers and the community,” Kirkpatrick said in a statement. “The suspect’s actions endangered lives, but thanks to the quick and decisive response of our officers, we were able to ensure the safety of others and take a dangerous individual off the streets.”
