New South Wales records one new Covid case in eastern Sydney after a man in his 50s tests positive
New South Wales has recorded one new community case of Covid after a man in Sydney’s eastern suburbs tested positive to the virus.
The man, aged in his 50s, has not returned from overseas recently and does not work in border control, hotel quarantine or health care.
He went for a Covid swab on Tuesday and he returned a positive result on Wednesday.
NSW Health said genome sequencing is underway and authorities are urgently contacting close contacts, who are being advised to get tested and isolate.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the surprise community case on Wednesday afternoon.
She said the man was ‘very active in the inner east’ and he frequented a number of venues while he may have been infectious.
Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the Covid-infected man ‘did everything right’ in coming forward for testing.
‘But it goes to show that we can’t take a single thing for granted,’ she said.
‘It goes to show we have to maintain our social distancing … [and] hand hygiene; we need to get tested with the mildest of symptoms.’
