A World Cup in 2026 has Mexico contemplated for the third time as the venue. In the years 1970 and 1986 the heart of the country was Mexico City and the Azteca stadium was the most important architectural colossus in soccer. Forty years later, how will the international gaze find the installations in our country?
FIFA has already inspected the venues at the Akron stadium, at the Azteca and at the BBVA in Monterrey, and the latter will have strong competition in 2025, the year in which the premiere of the new “Volcano” is estimated.
Even the owners of the Tigres club and its stadium want to be the home of the Mexican National Team, for which they deposit the highest investment that has been made in the construction of a soccer property in two decades. Some 320 million dollars were set, considering that beyond its sports function it is a point of economic activity, near a convention and commercial center.
Supposedly, operating income from real estate and investment funds will raise resources for development. Tigres is interested in appearing on the international map, not only with participation in international tournaments, but also being an option for NFL or MLB matches.
