Syracuse, N.Y. — Rain beginning late New Year’s Eve is expected to give way to a multi-day storm bringing as much as 3 feet of lake effect snow to parts of Central New York, weather forecasters said.
The rain is expected to start at about 10 p.m. Tuesday in Syracuse, according to the National Weather Service, potentially putting a damper on festivities to celebrate the New Year.
Next up is the snow. A lake effect snow warning will begin at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day and last through Sunday afternoon.
Total snow accumulations of more than 2 feet are possible in Cayuga, Madison, Oneida and Onondaga counties, the weather service said. As much as three feet is possible in Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties.
Winds could gust as high as 45 mph, leading to blowing or drifting snow. Travel could be difficult to impossible during the storm.
The snow is expected to start Wednesday night, forecasters said, with a well-defined lake effect storm developed by Thursday. The snow is expected initially to be most intense near Syracuse and along portions of the Thruway.
The lake effect snow bands are expected to shift northward Thursday night, becoming more focused on Oswego, Lewis and Oneida counties.
