Daniel Ortega reacted furiously on Monday night against the countries that have rejected the results of Sunday’s presidential elections, considered a farce by the Nicaraguan opposition. The president has appeared after being declared the winner of the elections with 75% of the votes to criticize the position of the international community, mainly Spain and the United States, two of the first countries to pronounce on the elections. Ortega has classified both nations as “imperialists”, “fascists” and, in the case of Spain, “descendants of Francoism”. He has also charged against the political prisoners of his regime, whom he has called “sons of bitches of the Yankee imperialists.”
In one of his most furious speeches since June, when he began a harsh crackdown on the opposition, Ortega has harshly addressed those detained by his regime, who according to the official speech participated in an attempted coup. “Those who are imprisoned there are the sons of bitches of the Yankee imperialists. They should be taken to the United States. They are not Nicaraguans, they have no homeland! ”, The president ranted. In Nicaragua, seven candidates for the presidency have been arrested by the opposition, as well as activists, businessmen, journalists, feminists and even political analysts. The detainees also include Ortega’s former battle companions during the guerrilla struggle against the Somoza dynasty, among them the historic commander Dora María Téllez and Victor Hugo Tinoco.
Ortega made these statements at a ceremony in the Plaza de la Revolución, in the heart of Managua, a symbolic place of the capital because the triumphant entry of the Sandinista guerrillas was celebrated there in 1979 after the fall of the Somoza dictatorship. Along with his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, his children and loyal regime officials, the president has criticized the international community after 36 countries rejected Sunday’s election results. In his speech, Ortega said that the 27 members of the European Union who did not know the elections are “Hitler’s brothers”, while he recalled the colonialist past of Spain, as well as the Franco dictatorship. “With what law [intervienen] the Spanish colonizers with the sword and the Bible? Poisonous combination to oppress our peoples ”, said Ortega.
The electoral results have been rejected by the United States, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Colombia and the 27 members of the European Union.
