Nokia has joined RE100, a global initiative led by Grupo Clima in alliance with CDP, which brings together the most influential companies in the world that are committed to the use of 100% renewable electrical energy.
Nokia has been reporting its emissions to CDP, the emissions reporting system, for over 10 years and recently achieved a high rating of A-, and works in conjunction with the organization to track its supply chain emissions and climate goals. .
The announcement follows a previous announcement, in which Nokia committed to reducing emissions from its own operations by migrating to 100% renewable electricity by 2025.
By joining the RE100 initiative, Nokia is showing leadership in adopting renewable electrical energy in its operations and in using its position in the ICT value chain to motivate its customers and suppliers to take similar steps to reduce emissions and accelerate the shift to sustainable electricity.
Additionally, and in line with the Science Defined Targets initiative to limit global warming to 1.5°C (SBTi), Nokia will continue to focus on reducing its emissions by 50% by 2030, throughout its supply chain, including its own operations, products in use, logistics and assembly factories.
Melissa Schoeb, Director of Corporate Affairs at Nokia, said: “We are proud to join the RE100 initiative, in recognition of our efforts to move to 100% renewable electricity by 2025. But this is only part of our strategy. of decarbonization. We are working with our customers and suppliers to reduce emissions throughout our value chain and continually improve the energy efficiency of our technologies to make our industry and other industries more sustainable.”
Sam Kimmins, director of RE100 at Climate Group, commented that “we are very pleased with the incorporation of Nokia to RE100, the global initiative led by the Climate Group in alliance with CDP”. By committing to 100% renewable energy, Nokia is taking an important step on its sustainability journey and joins more than 340 leading global companies that are committed to driving change in the marketplace. We invite other companies to follow this path”.
Although today’s commitment focuses on Nokia’s Tier 2 emissions, the company continues to work to reduce its Tier 1 and Tier 3 emissions. For example, Nokia is working to reduce emissions from its products currently in use, in line with its commitment. SBTi, and through the continuous improvement of energy efficiency throughout its product portfolio.
Nokia has been increasing the use of renewable energy in recent years, in 2020 it was 39% and it hopes to have reached the goal that was set for 2021 of 45%. Nokia is committed to accelerating this trend to reach 100% renewable energy by 2025.
