The session is expected to endorse the ruling party congress’s decision to return the General Secretariat, which was canceled in 2016, as leader Kim Jong-un elected the party’s general secretary.
According to “Yonhap” agency, it is likely that the next parliamentary session will focus on ministerial amendments in the cabinet and the State Affairs Committee, which is the highest decision-making body in North Korea.
Jo Yong-won, a senior party official who was seen accompanying the North Korean leader during his field trips, is expected to be appointed to the State Affairs Committee, a position only five people in North Korea hold, including Kim Jong Un.
It is believed that “Joe” became the third man in the country at the last party convention.
Leader’s sister, Kim Yoo-jung, is also receiving global attention, as it appears that she was demoted to “deputy director”, after she was “first deputy”, and was also not listed as a member or alternate member of the party’s Politburo.
Attention is also drawn to whether or not First Vice Foreign Minister Choi Soon-hee, who is the only member of the State Affairs Committee, will keep her position.
The meeting is also expected to address North Korea’s defense budget for building a new nuclear-powered submarine that is currently under development.
Kim is not expected to attend the parliamentary session in person.
It is noteworthy that the Supreme People’s Assembly is the highest authority under the constitution in North Korea, but it is content with sham approval of the ruling party’s decisions.
