Gambia, which holds the rotating presidency, has warned Organization of Islamic Cooperation That the “heinous murder” of the head of the political bureau For Hamas movement Ismail Haniyeh Threatens to push the Middle East into a “wider conflict.”
“This heinous act only serves to escalate existing tensions that could lead to a wider conflict that could engulf the entire region,” Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara said at the start of an extraordinary session of foreign ministers of the 57-nation organization in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah.
He added that Haniyeh's killing “will not weaken the Palestinian cause, but will contribute to strengthening it, which confirms the urgent need for justice and human rights for the Palestinian people.”
He continued, “The sovereignty of nation-states and the integrity of their territories are fundamental principles on which the international system is based,” noting that “respect for these principles has profound effects, and violating them has equally dire consequences.”
The meeting was held on Wednesday at the invitation of Palestine and Iran with the aim of discussing “the ongoing crimes of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, including the assassination of Haniyeh,” according to a statement issued by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The final statement of the meeting of the organization's ministers said, “The assassination of Haniyeh is an attack on Iran's sovereignty, territorial integrity and security… and constitutes a crime of aggression and a flagrant violation of international law.”
The statement added, “We hold Israel fully responsible for this sinful attack.”
