One person is dead after at least 20 people were shot outside a suburban Illinois shopping center overnight when hundreds gathered for a Juneteenth celebration.
The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honeysuckle Lane in Willowbrook, Illinois, Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District told WLS.
Witnesses said the massive crowd of more than 300 people had gathered for a Juneteenth celebration that turned violent.
Two people who were shot are in critical condition, according to local reports. Fire officials say others suffered ‘graze wounds.’

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honey Suckle Lane, Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District told WLS
‘It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped,’ witness Markeshia Avery said. ‘They just kept going. After that, we literally scattered away.’
Emergency services responded to the shooting near Willowbrook Shopping Mall in Illinois after gunfire erupted during an illegal street takeover attended by up to 300 people overnight.
A massive police presence remained on the scene at 5:30 a.m. and are investigating.
