The Orthodox Christian community in Turkey celebrated the birth and baptism of Jesus Christ in Istanbul on Wednesday.
Before the celebration of the “Epiphany” in Istanbul’s Golden Horn as is customary, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Bartholomew I, held a mass in the Church of St. George (Aya Yorgi).
After performing the prayers, clergymen and worshipers headed to the Golden Horn to watch the race to obtain the wooden cross being thrown into the water. Due to coronavirus restrictions, only two men participated in the race. Whereas, the ritual habit attracts large numbers of people.
