‘Hate in their heart’: Outrage as Republican congressman Byron Donalds’ office is sent a copy of Uncle Tom’s Cabin
- ‘Whoever sent this book did so w/ hate in their heart & the desire to depict me as a sellout,’ Donalds wrote on Twitter
- ‘Uncle Tom’ is a slur based on the novel to call a black person who is overly deferential to white people
- During the House Speaker’s election Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., made a similar insinuation, calling Donalds a ‘prop’
Florida GOP Rep. Byron Donalds revealed that he was mailed a copy of Uncle Tom’s Cabin to insinuate a racial slur against him.
‘Today, my D.C. office received a copy of the world-renowned book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Whoever sent this book did so w/ hate in their heart & the desire to depict me as a sellout,’ Donalds wrote on Twitter.
‘Concentration & mental toughness are the margins of victory,’ he said, quoting NBA player Bill Russell.
‘Uncle Tom’ is an insult based on the novel to call a black person who is overly deferential to white people.
During the House Speaker’s election Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., made a similar insinuation, calling Donalds a ‘prop.’
‘He is a prop,’ Bush, who is also black, wrote on Twitter.
‘Despite being Black, he supports a policy agenda intent on upholding and perpetuating white supremacy. His name being in the mix [for Speaker] is not progress—it’s pathetic.’
During the Speaker’s debacle, Republicans noted it was the first time two black men – Donalds and Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries – had been on the ballot.

Donalds shot back: ‘Nobody asked @CoriBush her opinion on the matter. Before you judge my agenda, let’s have a debate over the policies and outcomes. Until then, don’t be a crab in a barrel!’
Donalds was among a group of nearly two dozen Republicans who refused to vote for Kevin McCarthy for Speaker, demanding steep concessions.
Donalds was also asked about Bush’s comments during an appearance on Fox Business and said: ‘Man, that sucked, man, to be honest with you, man … If you see a black man rising, let the man rise, even if you don’t agree with him.’
Donalds is one of four black Republicans in the U.S. House – up from two in the last Congress. Last term Donalds revealed he had been shut out from the Congressional Black Caucus, an influential and official nonpartisan group on Capitol Hill that is comprised entirely of Democrats.
The Florida Republican has become a frequent talking head on Fox News and ran unsuccessfully against Rep. Elise Stefanik for House Conference Chair.
