SAN DIEGO, Calif. (WKRC) — A man was mauled to death by his three “massive” dogs at a playground.
According to The New York Post, a man was attacked by his own dogs while at a playground in San Diego Friday. The publication reported that the dogs continued to maul the man despite attempts from bystanders to stop the attack.
San Diego police responded at around noon after receiving reports of a dog attack, according to The Post, which reported that authorities found three “XL bullies” attacking an individual.
The publication reported that one witness thought police were trying to arrest a criminal because the attack was so vicious.
“I just saw they had something trapped in the weeds over here. I thought it was a person at first because they were talking about setting up a perimeter,” Steve Marto, an eyewitness, told KTLA. “They were big, like XL bullies, just massive muscle.”
According to The Post, bystanders attempted to fend off the dogs by hitting them with a golf club and shovels, with officers eventually having to deploy tasers to end the attack.
Authorities were able to subdue two of the dogs, although a third was able to escape into a nearby neighborhood, which resulted in an elementary school going into lockdown, per The Post, which noted that the animal was eventually located back at its home.
“The officer was able to break up the dogs. They fled, and the injured male was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries,” police said, per the publication.
According to The Post, the victim died at the hospital.
The outlet noted that a child was on the scene at the time with the victim but was not harmed in the attack.
“I don’t understand why someone would want to have three dogs that size. You’re just looking for a problem, in my opinion,” Marto said, per The Post.
