Pardo Rebolledo and Pérez Dayán will preside over the rooms of the SCJN

The ministers Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo and Alberto Pérez Dayán were appointed presidents of the First and Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), respectively, replacing the ministers Ana Margarita Ríos Farjat and Yasmín Esquivel Mossa, who concluded your periods last December 31; both will hold office for two years (2023-2024).

Pérez Dayán was elected yesterday by ballot, in an unprecedented event since it is customary to do it by show of hands, by three votes; His contender, Minister Loretta Ortiz Ahlf, won two votes.

It transpired that the ministers Javier Laynez Potisek and Yasmín Esquivel Mossa voted for Pérez Dayán, and Luis María Aguilar Morales for Ortiz Ahlf.

Proposed by Ríos Farjat, Pardo Rebolledo was elected last Monday, unanimously, in an economic vote.

Minister Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, president of the SCJN, determined that her predecessor in office, Arturo Zaldívar Lelo de Larrea, will succeed her in the First Chamber.

In compliance with the Constitution, the Organic Law of the Judiciary of the Federation establishes that the SCJN will have two chambers, which will be made up of five ministers, the presence of four being sufficient to function.

Article 23 of said ordinance provides that every two years the members of the chambers will choose from among themselves the person who should serve as president, who may not be re-elected for the immediately subsequent period.

Whoever presides over the highest constitutional court, orders article 2, will not be part of the room.

After the election of Piña Hernández, the First Chamber, in charge of sitting on civil and criminal matters, is made up of Pardo Rebolledo, Zaldívar, Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena and Minister Ríos Farjat.

The Second Chamber, which is in charge of sitting on administrative and labor matters, is made up of Esquivel Mossa, Ortiz Ahlf and the ministers Pérez Dayán, Laynez Potisek and Aguilar Morales.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated that he did not intervene in the internal process to designate a new president of the SCJN, a nomination that fell to Minister Piña Hernández, and revealed that some of the ministers, who according to his detractors attend to his requests and those who occupy the position because he proposed them, they voted in such a way that their decision does not match what is rumored.

She assured that the person who was appointed president of the Court voted for “Laynez, Pardo, Dayán and González Alcántara, four, and Yasmín five, and the vote of Mrs. Piña six. That’s how it stayed, six to five”.

And that, for Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, against whose candidacy he openly demonstrated, Zaldívar and Loretta voted – “there are two who sympathize with us, who did not pay attention to me if it were about that” -, Ríos Farjat, whom he proposed as minister , and Aguilar Morales.
