Paris admitted through a statement from the Elysee that the Algerian militant Ali Boumendjel did not commit suicide, but was tortured and killed by the French army in the year one thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven.
This recognition met with objection by the French right, while human rights organizations demanded that France recognize all its crimes against the occupation at once.
