A missed extra point by kicker Parker Romo proved decisive in the Atlanta Falcons’ 24-23 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, a game where the team’s narrow margin for error was on full display.
Romo’s failed attempt in the fourth quarter followed a Michael Penix Jr. touchdown pass that had brought Atlanta within one point. The miss, which would have tied the game at 24, halted the team’s momentum and came against Romo’s former team.
The kick marked a low point for Romo, who has been largely reliable since taking over for an injured Younghoe Koo. This season, the 28-year-old has converted 11 of 14 field goals and 12 of 13 extra points.
Following the game, Head Coach Raheem Morris confirmed Romo’s position is under immediate review.
“Obviously, we’ve got to look at that and we’ve started that process already,” Morris said. “We’ve worked out a bunch of different people so we’ll be able to bring people in and we’ll figure out what it’s going to be this week. At the end of the day, you’ve got to make that kick.”
Before signing Romo in Week 2, the Falcons had worked out kickers Zane Gonzalez, Michael Badgley, and Ben Sauls. The team also has German-born kicker Lenny Krieg on the practice squad, who could be an option for an NFL debut during the Falcons’ upcoming International Series game in Berlin.
“We’ve got to get that fixed, and it has to be fixed now,” Morris concluded. “It has to be fixed right now.”
