The man allegedly drove off after his Ford Focus struck two men and two women on the intersection of Marsden Street and Argyle Street in Parramatta in western Sydney just before 9pm on Monday.

The group suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were all taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment.

Police allege the Ford stopped and two men, 21 and 23, and a woman, 22, got out to help the injured pedestrians – but the men then got back into the vehicle and drove away.

The car’s three occupants were arrested when they later returned to the scene.

The older man then allegedly returned a positive result to an alcohol breath test after being taken to Parramatta Police Station.

The 23-year-old was charged with failing to stop and assist after impact causing injury, not giving particulars to an injured person, negligent driving and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Police will allege in court he did not stop at a red light before hitting the pedestrians.

He was given bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on February 10.

The younger man and the woman were released pending further inquiries.

The Ford was also found nearby and seized for examination.

The four pedestrians were all taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment. The 23-year-old alleged driver of the car that hit them has been charged with a series of offences

Photos taken at the scene showed paramedics wheeling someone into an ambulance on a stretcher.

‘We believe they were crossing the road at the time of the incident,’ NSW Ambulance chief inspector Brian Parsell said.

‘They have suffered orthopaedic injuries and are in a serious but stable condition.’
