Paul Merson has jokingly admitted that his prediction that Tottenham striker Harry Kane would struggle under Jose Mourinho was ‘horribly wrong’.

Sky Sports pundit Merson previously claimed that Kane would find it difficult to make an impact under Mourinho, who has often been known for preferring his teams to play in a defensive manner.

However, Kane has continued to thrive under Mourinho and has proceeded to score 13 goals in 14 games across all competitions so far this season.

A Tottenham supporter paid £62 on video-sharing website Cameo to get former Arsenal player Merson to record a message admitting that he was wrong.

In a video posted on Twitter, Merson said: ‘But you’re right I am wrong there mate, Harry Kane will score goals wherever he goes. He’s a top centre-forward and I have to admit that I got that horribly wrong.’

Speaking on Sky Sports in June, Merson had said: ‘When Jose took the job I worried for Harry Kane.

‘He played under Pochettino and Tottenham had a go wherever they went. There were goals, there were crosses, there were shots.

‘He’s going to be playing up front on his own and it is going to be hard work. In the end he is trying to hit 60-yard passes just to get involved in the game and that’s not Harry Kane.

‘I don’t see him getting 25-30 goals a season the way Jose will want to play, and he [Mourinho] won’t want to play like it was when he first got in there, 4-2s and 5-3s, no way.’

Kane scored a late winner on Sunday as Tottenham won 1-0 away to West Brom.

The victory saw Mourinho’s side temporarily move to the top of the Premier League, although Leicester went above them later in the day.

Kane has now scored 150 Premier League goals and is only the tenth player to achieve that feat.
