Irish coach Chris Hughton paid the price for Ghana’s national team’s early exit from the group stage of the African Cup of Nations currently being held in Ivory Coast, when the local federation dismissed him on Wednesday.
The Ghanaian Football Association said – in a statement on its official website – that it “has relieved Chris Hughton of his duties as coach of the senior national team with immediate effect.”
He added, “The Executive Council also took a decision to dissolve the Black Stars’ technical staff.” He continued, “The Ghana Football Association will present in the coming days a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

The former coach of Tottenham, Newcastle, Birmingham City, Norwich City, Brighton and Nottingham Forest became the first victim of an early exit from the continental competition, noting that Tanzania, which faces the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday, dismissed its Algerian coach Adel Amrouche after he was suspended for 8 matches by the African Confederation (CAF) for disciplinary reasons.
Hughton assumed his duties last February, succeeding local Otto Adu, and failed to break the jinx that haunted the champions of the African continent in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982.
Ghana, crowned with 4 continental titles, disappointed the hopes that were pinned on it by at least skipping the first round, and was content to score only two points in the second group, which ended in third place.
Ghana began its campaign with a resounding loss to Cape Verde, the surprise of the group and the tournament so far 1-2, then fell into the trap of a draw against Egypt, which holds the record for the number of titles in the tournament (7), after advancing twice (2-2), before conceding a victory in It was within reach against Mozambique in the third and final round, after it advanced with a clean double before conceding twice in the first and fourth minutes of stoppage time.
