“We will continue to meet with members, constitution experts and others,” Pelosi said in a letter to the Democrats, published yesterday, after receiving comments on how to respond to Wednesday’s riots, adding: “I urge you to be ready to return to Washington this week.” .
Pelosi stated in the letter that lawmakers took an oath to defend democracy.
“For this reason, it is absolutely necessary to hold accountable those who committed the assault on our democracy. There must be an admission that this profanation was instigated by the president,” she wrote.
Pelosi concluded, “From what I’ve heard from the members and the public, it is clear once again that our mission is to save our democracy.”
The message comes amid discussions about the attempt to isolate US President Donald Trump for a second time, due to his role in inciting his supporters, who stormed the Capitol building last Wednesday and caused great chaos.
Five people were killed during the storming, including Brian Seknik, a 42-year-old Capitol Police officer.
In a hours-long conference call with the caucus of the House of Representatives on Friday, lawmakers expressed almost unanimous support for Trump’s impeachment.
Democrats and some Republicans had previously expressed their support for Vice President Mike Pence and other members of the Cabinet, calling for the implementation of the twenty-fifth constitutional amendment to dismiss Trump, fearing that he would provoke more violence in the remaining days of his presidency.
