US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced in a statement that Congress will resume the process of certifying Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s victory later on Wednesday night.
“The decision was taken after contacts with Vice President Mike Pence and others to resume the certification of Biden’s victory tonight once the building is secured,” she said.
Informed sources said that House and Senate leaders were holding consultations on whether they could resume ratifying Biden’s victory, after a day marred by a violent crowd of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol building.
For his part, Democratic Representative Hakim Jeffrey said: “The Capitol is currently evacuated from the intruders … and when the situation will be safe, we will return to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities.”
He added, “This is the United States. We will not allow the rule of lawlessness to undermine the rule of law.”
Earlier, an official in the US Congress building, Paul Irving, announced that the building was secured, hours after it was stormed and clashed with security forces there, which led to the death of a woman with a bullet in the chest.
